Think more positively

Most often we are our own worst critics.

This can lead to lower self-esteem and self-confidence in our abilities.

One way to start to build your self-worth and boost your self-confidence is to think more positively about yourself.

When negative thoughts about your appearance, abilities, or anything else start to creep up on you. Take a moment and think of something positive about yourself.

Or you can turn those negative thoughts into a positive ones.

Instead of thinking “I can’t do this right”. Try “well that way didn’t work, let me try it this way instead”.

This can boost both your self-confidence and your belief in yourself.

Journal/track your thoughts

Journaling is a great way to get out of your head. Take time at the end of the day to track your thoughts and experiences.

This can help you see where you may have trouble with your confidence or self-worth. Some questions you can ask yourself are:

  • What feelings did you experience today?
  • Where they negative or positive?
  • What situations prompted them?

These are just a few, but you get the idea. The deeper you can go into your feelings of self-doubt, the better equipped you are to build your self-confidence back up.

Take care of yourself

Taking care of yourself is the main key to feeling good about you.

When you eat well, get enough sleep, and drink plenty of water you start to feel better. Your self-confidence is mostly in your head.

But, if you nurture your body you can go a long way towards improving your self-esteem.

Dress the part

The way you dress can have a huge impact on the way you feel.

When you dress in certain clothes you feel empowered, confident, and able to take on the world. Now those outfits will ultimately be different for everyone.

But we all have certain clothes that make us feel more confident. For me, it’s just simple graphic t-shirts and jeans. Definitely not anyone’s idea of a power outfit, but it’s what makes me feel comfortable and confident. And I get to show parts of my personality in what the shirts say. Total win for me!

Believe in yourself

This is a tried and true approach to feeling more self-confident and boosting your self-esteem.

The more you tell yourself you can do something, the more you start to actually believe it.

Pro Tip: First thing in the morning look in the mirror and repeat after me “I am a badass at -_____ and I will do amazing things today”. This is a very simple way to boost your confidence and increase your belief in yourself.

Avoid negative thoughts

Negative thoughts lead to negative feelings.

Not just about yourself, but others too.

If you look at yourself and think that no one will hire you for _____reason.

Then they probably won’t. It may not be the exact reason, but your mind will connect the two and start to believe it.

When you feel negative thoughts start to creep in think of the things that you like/love about yourself.

One way to do this is to write 1 to 2 positive things about yourself each morning. That way it will stay fresh in your mind all day.

Stay away from negative people

Again with the negative. You see the theme here right?

People that are always negative or even just moody all the time can bring your own mood down as well.

And when your mood goes down, so does your belief in yourself and your abilities.

Try to keep more positive people around you. They will help you build yourself up and you can do the same for them.

Learn from others

One of the best ways to start to boost your own self-confidence and concept of self-worth is to learn from others.

You can read different books that are aimed toward helping you boost your confidence or other personal development books.

Some that I recommend are:

You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*CK: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life

Get Out of Your Head: Stopping the Spiral of Toxic Thoughts

You can also talk to people that you look up to and admire to see what things they do to keep their confidence up. You’d probably be surprised at the answers. I know I have been.

Then there also are countless sites and publications online that contain inspiring and motivating stories from people who have been in the same position as you.

Remember your why

When you feel like you can’t do something always remember your why.

Ask yourself what your end goal is. Why do you want ______?

Are you doing it for yourself? Your family? Or another reason entirely?

Remembering why you are on the path you are on can help boost your confidence and keep you motivated to keep going.

Choose happiness

We all have two choices when we get up in the morning. To be happy about our lives, or not to be.

When you choose to feel happiness or joy in the life that you have it can go a long way towards feeling better about yourself and the life that you have.

If instead, you choose to be resentful of the things that you do not have, you will not be happy about your life.

If there are things that you can change to make it better. Then change them.

Granted it won’t always be that simple but there are a few things you can do to help the process.

One of those things is to step back and take a long hard look at what is around you.

What are the things that you like about your life?

Is it your kids, spouse, or the home you live in?

Do you love your job or do you hate it?

By taking stock of what you like about your life you are better able to choose happiness. It takes more energy to be angry than it does to be happy.

So instead of looking at what is wrong with you or your life, try to see all of the good parts of it instead. It will be easier to be happy and that can be a huge boost to your confidence.

Improve your mindset

Your mindset controls more of your life than you think.

Different types of mindsets control the way you see things. If you have a fixed mindset, then you feel like you can’t change anything.

This can leave you feeling frustrated about your life and abilities.

But if you have a growth mindset, then you know that it is possible to change the things around you. This includes yourself.

Your mindset is so important in boosting your confidence.

If you feel that you can change, you can take actionable steps toward that goal. But if you feel that your confidence is something that you cannot change, it never will.

Always keep learning

One thing that can be a great boost in self-confidence is to learn something new.

Or even just add to knowledge and skills that you already have.

One of the best things about the internet today is that there is no end to the free or low-cost courses that you can take in your spare time.

And there are plenty of people willing to teach on just about anything that you can think of.

Slow down and appreciate life

When was the last time you stopped to appreciate life?

I know that is one thing that I find hard to do because there is always a ton of stuff that needs to get done.

And it feels like there is never enough time in the day to do it all.

So take a little bit of time each day to just appreciate the things that are around you.

Sure, the house might be a mess and the kids are running around like little demons.

But they are YOUR little demons and it is YOUR house. These are things that you have worked hard for and you deserve time to spend with the kids and just enjoy them.

Final thoughts on Boosting Your Self-Confidence

There is no set way for everyone to boost their self-confidence. It is a journey that is unique to each individual and the path is different for everyone.

The main thing to remember when looking to boost your confidence or self-esteem is to take care of yourself. And many outside influences impact how you see and feel about yourself too. By limiting your time spent with negativity and those that are not looking to build you up, you can work toward improving yourself and your life.
