Eye Health

Graphic for Tips to improve eye health

I have noticed recently that everywhere that you look, people are talking about health. Whether it is on social media, television or magazines, people are encouraging others to get healthy. Everyone seems to have their own take on how that is to be done. People want to know the best ways to stay fit, get healthy, or lose weight.

I think many people overlook the fact that while it is important to ensure that your body as a whole is healthy, there are specific areas of the body that need more thought than others just because of our way of life.

In today’s electronic world many people spend a lot of their time staring at a screen of some sort. Whether it’s a computer, tablet or smartphone most of us are plugged-in in some way.

One of the things that many people overlook is the impact that staring at a screen can have on their overall eye health. Most people don’t realize that by looking at a screen for long periods they are causing their eyes to strain, and this causes our eyes to become fatigued.

I deal with eye strain constantly and know how difficult it can be when you have to get work done and your eyes seem too tired to work on the computer anymore.

What I have learned over the years of having both Glaucoma and kids with Nystagmus is that there are many symptoms of eye strain. The most common are tired, sore, or dry eyes. While these symptoms are annoying to deal with, there are ways that you can ease the discomfort that is associated with the symptoms.

Take a Break

I know that sometimes it can be difficult to get up and walk away when working on a project, but I try to get up and take a break about once every thirty minutes to give my eyes a break when on the computer.

Reading Glasses

Even if you have good vision, over-the-counter reading glasses can be helpful when working on the computer. They lessen the amount that your eyes might strain to read what is on the screen. Another thing that you can invest in is Blue Light filtering reading glasses. These are available in most places and you can get a pair for about $20 or less.

Eye Drops

If you experience dry eyes, lubricating eye drops are good to use. I always carry some with me and they go a long way towards keeping your eyes moistened so they do not become too dry and tired.

Changing the font

I have found that changing the font on the computer and my phone makes the text easier to read. My eyes don’t have to adjust as much to the smaller letters.

Changing the brightness/contrast

By changing the brightness levels to be more comfortable, It can make it easier to see what I am working on.

Blue Light Filter

I always use the Blue Light Filter when it’s an option. This reduces the level of blue light that is emitted from certain devices.

While these are things that can be done to decrease instances of eye strain, there are some other things that you can do to keep your eyes healthy as well.

Regular eye exams

One of the most important things that you can do to help keep your eyes healthy is to have regular eye exams or to go when you think there might be a problem.

This is important because they can often find issues early on before they become a problem.

When I was younger if I had not let my parents know that I was having headaches when I read, we would not have found out that I had Glaucoma at an early age. This means that I did not have to deal with the vision loss that can be associated with it.

Food to keep eyes healthy

We all know that eating certain foods like carrots can be beneficial to eye health. There are other foods that you can eat as well that are good for not just your eyes, but help to ensure that you are eating a healthy diet as well. Foods that contain antioxidants and Vitamin C are good for not just your overall health but can help protect your eyes as well.

There are many different places that you can look to find information on what things to do to help eye health and WebMD is a good place to go when learning what not just what foods to eat to promote eye health but to learn more about eye health in general.

Some things work better than others for different people. It is always important to discuss things with a doctor before making any major changes to your diet or other routines. But by making some small changes, you can go a long way in making sure that your whole body is healthy.

What things do you do to keep not only you but your eyes healthy as well?
