How to do a major spring cleaning

While there are many reasons why it sucks to be home all the time right now. It is a great time to take stock and do a major spring cleaning. One of the things that I like to do this time of year is to go through the house and get rid of a lot of junk that is just taking up space.

The two times a year that I do this is in the spring and fall. These are the best times to deep clean and declutter because it is when there is a big change in the seasons. It helps to get into the right mindset for the new seasons.

If you are stuck for ideas on what to clean or declutter this room by room list will help.

Kitchen

  • Go through the cabinets and get rid of out of date or unused food and baking items. Clean the insides of them as you go making sure to wipe out any little things that might have fallen and reorganize items to make it easier to see what you might need.

  • Clean the insides of the microwave, stove, and fridge. When you clean the fridge go through the contents to get rid of anything that might have gone overlooked or is out of date.

  • Do a deep clean of the floors. Sweep and mop more thoroughly then you normally would. Clean walls, baseboards, and doors with a good cleaner.

Bedrooms

  • Go through the closets and drawers. Get rid of any clothes that no longer fit/ don’t get worn on a regular basis. Pack up winter clothes to make room for summer ones.

  • If you have carpets, vacuum and steam clean them. Clean baseboards and walls. Dust any blinds and wash curtains/window covers.

  • Wash pillows and any other bed coverings that might not normally get washed.
What to clean in the spring

Living Room

  • Steam clean carpets, couches and other soft surfaces.

  • Dust blinds and anything else that doesn’t normally get cleaned ( back of the television, DVD player, game systems, etc.).

  • Put away throw blankets that are not going to get used in the summer ( If your like me you have a lot).

  • Wash walls and window coverings. Clean windows and screens.

Outside

  • Trim hedges and weed flower beds to get ready for planting.

  • If you have a vegetable garden till the soil and get rid of weeds to get it ready.

  • Clean off outside furniture.

  • Clean outside toys and put air in bike tires.

Final Thoughts

There are of course many other things that you can do both inside and out to get your home ready for the spring. This is just a small list of some of the things that I like to do during a major spring cleaning.

If you decorate the house for the different seasons, this is a great time to pack up the winter stuff and bring out the spring/summer decorations. It’s also a great time to open the windows and let in the fresh air. Getting rid of the stuffy feeling in the house is a great way to perk yourself up.

If there are any other tips that you can think of let me know in the comments!
