For those on any type of personal development journey, some big questions seem to be: What does it mean to reinvent yourself? And how to reinvent yourself?
The idea of reinventing yourself can seem overwhelming. But it’s easier than you might think. The most important thing to remember is that you’re doing it for yourself and your self-improvement.
To me, as a mom, it feels like as the kids get older I have more time for myself. They don’t need me as much and I can spend time on things that I want to. Like becoming the most real version of myself for my new season in life.
But all that really means is that I have the time to work on myself. I can really dig deep and see what I want to do with the rest of my life. This is where the idea of reinventing myself comes in.
But what does that mean?
Some of the questions I ask myself are:
What do I want to do for the rest of my life? Do I want to go back to school? Or should I change careers?
These are just some of the thoughts that reinventing myself brings up.
But what reinventing yourself really means is to become the best version of yourself through thought work and determination.
While this may seem daunting at the outset. Once you start your reinvention journey the bigger picture becomes clearer and you can focus more on what your real goals are.

Steps to reinvent yourself
There are many different ways to reinvent yourself. Or find your true self even.
The steps here are not the only way to do it.
They’re just meant to be a guide or stepping stone to get started.
Take a look at your current self and situations
I mean it. Take a good long, hard look at where you’re at right now. Your thoughts, feelings, all of what makes you, you.
Once you do that you can see what if anything you might want or need to change.
This is the first and hardest part. Cause lets be real here. No one likes to dig deep and see what they might need to change about their lives.
But once you do the work, the rest comes a lot easier later on.
Figure out what making the change will mean to you
Some questions to ask yourself are:
- Why do I want to change
- How will this make any difference in my life
- What is the ultimate goal of doing this
Once you find the answers to these questions you can get a clearer picture of how reinventing yourself will make you feel.
Are you doing it for just yourself or for those around you too? That is one question you need to answer honestly. If you’re not doing it to become the best version of yourself, then why are you doing it.
For me, it’s both. I wanted to become the best version of myself for myself and for my kids.
Their life and mine are better for the changes and steps that I’ve taken to be true to myself and embrace all the quirkiness that is me.
And as they get older they see that it’s okay to be yourself and not just the labels that others want to put on you.
So get a clear view of what life might be like once you put in the work.
And you may find that you already are the best version of yourself. But you just want to make a few small changes to your life.
Make a plan to implement your changes
Nothing ever happens without some form of plan. If you want this to work you need to figure out the best approach. And make a plan to keep yourself going.
Because it will be hard at first. But once you get started and have a plan or steps you need to take it becomes easier.
There are different ways to plan it out. You can use a habit tracker or a planner. Or a combination of both.
The main thing is to write out what your goals are and to take small steps each day to get there.
Declutter your space
Even though this doesn’t seem like it would be a step it is.
Once you get rid of objects that you don’t need or that are just in the way. You can start to make room for things that fit better with who you want to become.
Decluttering is a big part of self-improvement because it lets you get rid of things that no longer serve your purpose.
And it allows you to free up space for things that will help you along the way
Journal and Meditate
Meditating and journaling have always been ways of discovering your true self.
Journaling lets you get your thoughts and feelings out of your head and puts them somewhere you can look at them.
Meditation is a way for you to be still and gain control of your thoughts.
Clear up your emotions and thoughts
Identifying thoughts and emotions that are holding you back is a big part of self-reinvention.
And journaling every day is a good way to identify them. It can be hard to get started figuring out what those thoughts and feelings might be.
But you can use Self-Growth Journal Prompts to help get started. These are a good way to really go deep and find the thoughts that are holding you back from becoming the version of you in your head.
Make time to put in the work you need to
Even though this is farther down the list it’s a really important step.
You have to make the time to put in the work. Only half-assing it and not putting the time aside will get you nowhere.
Make the time for yourself to do the work and it gets much simpler to do consistently.
Surround yourself with people who support you
Let people know what you’re doing from the start. Those that care about you will help you along the way and support your efforts.
People want you to succeed and will help you as much as they can. But they can only do so much.
The real work is inside your head. Only you can sort through and get your thoughts aligned with your self-improvement goals.
If anyone tells you it’s stupid or that it can’t be done they don’t need to be along for the ride.
Believe you can do it
Believing in yourself is a big part of any intentional work you do for yourself.
If you don’t really think you can change. You never will.
The biggest mistake most people make when trying to work on themselves or reinvent themselves is not believing they can change.
It’s all in your mindset and how you approach taking the first few steps to be the best you possible.
Find a mentor as you reinvent yourself
One thing that can help is to find someone or a group that is doing or has done the exact same thing.
They know how hard it can be, and they can offer additional support along the way if you need it.
Because you will need some help.
Doing any kind of inner work is hard and it can be easy to get off track.
But by being around and supported by others doing the same things you are. Will help keep you focused and on track.
Final thoughts on Reinventing Yourself
When you think of ways to reinvent yourself it can be a daunting thing.
But the process is easier once you start to commit to doing it. If you’re clear on why you want to reinvent yourself and have solid reasons. The rest of the journey is so much simpler.
The main thing you need to remember is that you need to have help and support along the way.
Once you commit to doing the work the end result is so worth it.
